Chloë Grace Moretz is distancing herself from recent ads for her upcoming animated film, Red Shoes & the 7 Dwarfs, calling out the billboards’ body-shaming message.
“I have now fully reviewed the mkting for Red Shoes, I am just as appalled and angry as everyone else, this wasn’t approved by me or my team,” the Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising star tweeted on Wednesday, May 31. “Pls know I have let the producers of the film know. I lent my voice to a beautiful script that I hope you will all see in its entirety. The actual story is powerful for young women and resonated with me. I am sorry for the offense that was beyond my creative control.”
The ads in question, which first appeared last week at the Cannes Film Festival, show a tall, slim woman in red heels next to a shorter, heavier-set version of herself holding a pair of dainty red heels in her hands.
The text accompanying the two images reads, “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?”
The movie, a twist on the classic Snow White fairy tale, features Moretz as the voice of the main character, a princess who “doesn’t fit into the celebrity world of Princesses – or their dress size,” according to a description on the production company’s website. The titular red heels allow the princess to strut around in a slimmer body.
Tess Holiday, a plus-size model, slammed the ad earlier this week, tweeting a photo of the billboard along with a comment: “How did this get approved by an entire marketing team? Why is it okay to tell young kids being fat = ugly?”
Sujin Hwang, one of the film’s producers, told CNN that the trailer and the billboards had been creating an “opposite effect from that which was intended.”
“Our film, a family comedy, carries a message designed to challenge social prejudices related to standards of physical beauty in society by emphasizing the importance of inner beauty,” Hwang said in a statement, adding, “We appreciate and are grateful for the constructive criticism of those who brought this to our attention. We sincerely regret any embarrassment or dissatisfaction this mistaken advertising has caused to any of the individual artists or companies involved with the production or future distribution of our film, none of whom had any involvement with creating or approving the now discontinued advertising campaign.”
Moretz found herself in hot water last year after she slammed Kim Kardashian for sharing a nearly nude photo of herself to Instagram.
“@KimKardashian I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies,” Moretz tweeted at the time, to which the reality star retorted, “Let’s all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. Your Nylon cover is cute boo.”
Writer Truman Garcia Capote has been brought to the screen several times, most notably during the face-off between Capote and Infamous. The latest person stepping into the role is Beauty And The Beast’s Josh Gad, who will star alongside Jack O’Connell and Chloe Grace Moretz In Party Of The Century.
American Splendor writing/directing duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman have come up with the script, which takes place during the infamous Black And White Ball that Capote threw in 1966, attended by a thronging mass of people from all strata of ’60s society. Stories about what went on still resonate, though the directors have been inspired by an apparently apocryphal tale to emerge from the night.
O’Connell will play Pete, a working-class lift operator who develops feelings for Fawn (Moretz) a Hollywood ingenue who scores an invite to the party. “Our film is a delicate balance of worlds converging at a pivotal moment in time,” the filmmakers tell Screen International. “Jack, Chloe and Josh are brilliant performers who can embody these worlds while bringing the electricity and pathos required to make the story fly.” Pulcini and Springer Bergman are looking to kick off shooting later this year, and sales company Bankside will be touting the rights in Cannes.
O’Connell has been working on Scott Frank’s TV Western Godless and is attached to play Alexander McQueen for a new biopic. Moretz has November Criminals due this year and will be seen in the Suspiria remake. Gad is one of the passengers in Murder On The Orient Express, due here on 3 November.
Oscar-winning writer-director Neil Jordan will helm the thriller, which Sierra/Affinity will introduce to buyers in Cannes.
Recent Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz have signed on to star in The Widow, helmed by Oscar winner Neil Jordan.
Ray Wright wrote the script, which follows a young woman who is missing her deceased mother and is new to Manhattan. She strikes up an unlikely friendship with an older widow, but the widow’s intentions turn out to be sinister.
Lawrence Bender, James Flynn and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, an SK Global company, are producing the buzzy project. Sierra/Affinity will represent foreign sales for the thriller and is launching the project at this year’s Cannes Film Market. CAA and WME Global are co-repping the film domestically. SKE CEO Sidney Kimmel and president John Penotti made the announcement on behalf of the company.
Huppert earned a Golden Globe, an Independent Spirit Award and a best actress Oscar nomination for her work in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016). Her other recent films include Souvenir, Barrage and Michael Haneke’s Happy End, which will play in Cannes this month. She is repped by CAA and Voyez Mon Agent in France.
Moretz recently starred in the Neighbors franchise, The 5th Wave and Brain on Fire, which debuted at Sundance. She has wrapped work on Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria with Dakota Johnson and The Miseducation of Cameron Post. She’s repped by WME, T Squared Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
Jordan wrote and directed the 1992 film The Crying Game (which won the Oscar for best original screenplay) and also directed 1994’s Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, 1999’s The End of the Affair and 2007’s The Brave One. He’s repped by CAA and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates in the U.K.
SKE recently produced the Academy Award best picture nominee Hell or High Water, which also received nominations for best supporting actor, original screenplay and film editing.
